How to Save Money by Sewing for your Children
1. If you have never sewed before start with sewing machine shopping. If you are sewing to save money start with an inexpensive sewing machine but one that has all of the features you may need. Examples of good sewing machine features should include the following. It should be able to sew button holes and has a zipper foot for installing zippers. Most computerized sewing machines today will have these features. This will make learning easier and cut down on early frustration. You can purchase a good sewing machine on discount if you purchase it through a coupons savings site. My favorite is Big Crumbs (click here to go to Big Crumbs). It’s completely free to sign up and can save you ton of money on just about everything you buy. 2. Search for easy simple patterns. Do not overwhelm yourself by trying to sew an ornate dress or a difficult shirt at first. You may find it easier if you start with a simple skirt or shorts with an elastic waist. Look for patters that say they are easy or for beginners on them. You can also save money by looking for free patterns online. I also suggest using tracing paper to trace the patterns you use instead of cutting the pattern. This way you can save money by using the same pattern as the child grows. This is also useful if you have a multi sized pattern and have children of different sizes that can both use the same pattern. 3. Once you have your pattern it's time to shop for fabric and thread. You can often get suggestions on what fabric will work best on back of the pattern. It is easiest to start at your local fabric store to get the feeling of textures on several different fabrics so you can determine what look you would like to achieve. Once you have determined what type of fabric you want you may find it is more frugal in some cases to buy online. Most online stores will have coupon codes and discounts for bulk orders to help save money. Also do consider looking for any online fabric store and checking to see if Big Crumbs has a coupon for it. 4. Once you have purchased your fabric follow the layout closely on the pattern and cut out your fabric. You are now ready to sew. I would suggest starting out with scrap fabric to get your techniques down and keep your sewing machine manual close at hand. It will give you tips on tension and threading. It may also be helpful to watch videos online of different tips and tricks to help you along the way.
