How to make Homemade Laundry Detergent
If you are interested in making homemade frugal laundry detergent and save money for the rest of your life then you are in for a fantastic surprise. Homemade laundry detergent is incredibly easy to make and lasts a very long time.
You will need a Fels Naptha or Ivory Bar of soap, a 5 gallon bucket, water, borax, Arm & Hammer washing soda (not baking soda).
1. Grate bar of soap and add to saucepan with water. Stir continually over medium-low heat until soap dissolves and is melted. Fels Naptha smells absolutely fantastic and will make your laundry smell great too!
2. Fill a 5 gallon bucket half full of hot tap water. Add melted soap, washing soda and Borax. Stir well until all powder is dissolved. Fill bucket to top with more hot water. Stir, cover and let sit overnight to thicken. It will form a gel much like regular laundry detergent but thicker - allowing you to dilute in step 3.
3. Stir and fill a used, clean, laundry soap dispenser half full with soap and then fill rest of way with water. Shake before each use.
This recipe makes 10 GALLONS of frugal homemade laundry detergent for under $2.00. You may optionally add essential oil to make the laundry detergent smell how you wish. This can save you a lot of money (into thousands of dollars) in your lifetime is you use this rather than buying laundry detergent at the store!
