Consideration of Bills Saves Money

_________________________________________________________________________________

A lot of people go about their lives never considering how they are spending money. They simply buy what they “need”, or perhaps what they think they need. Sometimes taking a step back and trying to find contentment may really help save money that would be spent needlessly.

1. Examine your “real” financial goals. Is it early retirement, paying off your house, wanting to have the freedom to stay home with your kids or just having a little extra at the end of the month to give you and your family “breathing room”?

2. Re-evaluate every current monthly expense. People are often surprised how much money they are wasting on every month. Consider all monthly payments cell phone, satellite/cable, and even your electric bill and car insurance. These are payments that are constantly “eating away” at your financial freedom. When going month to month most people do not consider how much money they may be spending in a year of time on spread out monthly payments. These things all add up, sometimes drastically.

Consider what you can really do without to reach your goal. If it is giving up you high cell phone bill to have a less expensive prepaid cell phone, reducing your satellite/cable package or getting rid of it all together. Small changes can really add up in the course of just a few months. When it comes to your electric bill, shop around you would be surprised to see how many electric companies there are out there. The prices really vary so shop around.

Car insurance is the same way. Just because you may have gotten a great rate years ago when you signed up with your car insurance provider does not mean it's even a good rate today. Also, if you are a homeowner find out if there are discounts if you add a homeowner’s insurance policy. Most often you can really save money this way.

3. Consider your “down time” activities. How much are you spending going out to eat at restaurants and eating fast food? This can really be a surprising hidden cost. It is easy to spend hundreds of dollars eating out monthly and never even realizing where the money went. Changing this habit may also have the benefit of improving your health and reduce future health care costs for you and your family depending on how healthy you eat at home. Many working people eat out for lunch every day. Consider the savings if you brought lunch from home for one month. Now consider the savings over a year. It just keeps on going. By eating at home, you will learn how much you can save money on food.

4. Consider extravagant spending. Heavily consider any big purchases. Wait a while and be sure you really want to spend your money. Consider the time and effort it took to make the money you are going to spend. Never buy big purchases on credit. You will be paying for the same item several times over in interest. Don't buy for happiness it is fleeting. You can find true contentment in the freedom you have by saving. Remember the “newness” of any item you buy will wear off and you will be left with the bill. If you do decide the item is something you “need” shop around until you have found the best possible deal.

Give yourself time to really save up for the item so it won't put a pinch on your pocket book at the time of purchase.
