Cantenna Wireless Antenna

How to Build a "Cantenna"

_________________________________________________________________________________

A "cantenna" is a home made directional wifi antenna that can be made for very little money. They are used to get better WIFI reception or gains from distances. They can penetrate through walls better than an omnidirectional WIFI antenna as well. The "cantenna" wireless antenna has been known to have outdoor ranges up to 3 miles in a clear line of sight, and merely use old Pringles cans! "Cantennas" can save you a lot of money because they are next to free to build, and will in many cases will keep you from having to buy expensive WIFI antennas.

Here are some things that you'll need to build a "cantenna":
You'll need an empty Pringles potato chip can.
Also, you'll need A Female N connector.
Be sure you have some glue.
Get a 14 gauge wire (preferable copper), sold at hardware stores.
You'll also need some solder & soldering gun.

1. Solder a piece of 14 gauge copper wire on to the top of a female N connector. The copper wire should be long enough to reach the middle of the radius of the Pringles can. This wifi antenna will become directional once installed.

2. Measure the Pringles can from the base. Measure to 2 inches above the bottom of the can. Your new cantenna wireless antenna is directional, and will need to have the base of the can in the "back" of the antenna.

3. Mount or glue on the N connector on to the Pringles can. The wire should be in the center of the can bisecting the circle of the can. This will give you the best results in the center because it will give you the most reflective area and enhance your antenna's db gain.

4. Install the cantenna wireless antenna onto your wifi router or adapter. The pigtail connector will need a male-N connector that goes to your wireless router. Now simply point and adjust until you have the best db gain!
