How to Sew Curtain Panels
Sewing your own curtains will give you more choices about fabrics and colors to go with your current décor. You can also save money by not having to pay a premium buying store bought curtains. If you shop online and bargain hunt you can often get really great deals on fabric. Sewing curtains is also a great and inexpensive way to brighten up any room. 1. First measure the width and height of the window you are making curtains for. Keep in mind that most curtains are about half an inch from the floor. 2. Add 7 inches to the final length you want the curtains to be. 4 inches for the top hem and 3 inches for the bottom would be approximately the right measurement. Also, add 16 inches to the width measurement. This will give allowance for the side seams and will allow the curtains to “bunch”. When you are sewing curtain panels, you want to make sure to measure accurately for best results. 3. Divide the final width by 2 for 2 panels. 4. Measure and cut the fabric into curtain panels. 5. Press the long edges of the panels down ½ inches. Then press again at ½ inches and pin them down. Be sure to sew close to the folded edge on all panels. 6. On the top of the panel turn the fabric up ½ inch and press. Then turn up again 3 ½ inches and press and pin down. Sew ¼ inch up from the edge of the hem then measure about 1 inch up from that seam line (this I and sew a second parallel line (for the curtain rod casing) Standard curtain rods are 1 inch. You may have to adjust this measurement if you are using a “thicker” curtain rod. 7. On the bottom edge of the panel turn fabric up ½ inch and press. Then turn up again 2 ½ inches and pin down the edge. Sew the curtain panel along the bottom edge of the fold. 8. Hang curtain panels on the rods and enjoy your handy work and money savings!
