How to Make Homemade Candles

_________________________________________________________________________________

Making your own homemade candles can be a lot of fun. They make great gifts for family and friends. You can also save money not having to buy expensive candles from the store.

You will need the following supplies listed below.
A double boiler (preferably with a pour spout) a candle makers thermometer, a candle mold (you may even choose to use a jar), candle wicking and a dowel to tie the wicking to, soy or paraffin wax, essential oils for fragrance, and food coloring. Shop around online and in stores for these items and be creative. Online coupons may help you save money on your purchase.

1. Wick your mold. Place one end of wicking at the bottom of the candle mold and hold it in place with a small amount of warm wax. Then pull it tight enough to hold the wick strait and tie the other end to the dowel to hold it in place. Some metal molds may also come with a small hole in the bottom with a screw. Just put the wicking through the hole and screw in the screw wrapping the screw with wicking as you go. Then just cover the screw with warm wax to make an airtight seal. When making a homemade candle, it is important to align the wick very straight in the mold so that it will burn properly.

2. Heat the wax in the double boiler stirring frequently. Check the temperature often with the thermometer. It is also wise to be sure the candle mold is close by. It could be dangerous taking the pan with the hot wax far to pour. Once the wax is 200 degrees you can add the coloring and fragrance. Stir in food coloring and fragrance well to be sure it is evenly distributed.

3. Poor the wax mixture into the candle mold. Be sure the wicking is straight when pouring. Let the candle cool. You will want to wait until the candle is completely cool before removing from the candle mold.

4. You’re done! Now enjoy the warm glow and fragrance of your new homemade candle and enjoy the fact that you saved money and had fun making it!
